Unmanned aerial vehicles employed in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict have shown that they can be decisive for the outcome of a war, and that a new generation of intelligent weapons is going to substantially change the nature of future conflicts. New hypersonic weapon systems reaching more than ten times the speed of sound and any corner of the globe, or comprehensive reconnaissance by means of swarms of small satellites are capable of upsetting the balance of forces.

This book provides an overview of current technological developments and analyses the changes in the threat situation. It addresses how nations can respond to the latest technological and strategic challenges by adjusting their military capabilities.
